Meet Our Founder and Team at Ignite
Susanna Barkataki.
Founder, Ignite Institute for Yogic Leadership & Social Change
PhD Scholar in Yoga Psychology ·
Bestselling Author · International Yoga Teacher · Certified Yoga Therapist & Ayurvedic Practitioner
Susanna has spent over 15 years at the intersection of authentic yoga, social justice, and collective healing. As a South Asian woman who has witnessed yoga extracted from its roots and stripped of its power, she built Ignite Institute as a response a place where yoga is practiced as a complete system of liberation, not a wellness commodity.
She is the author of two bestselling books the #1 international bestseller Embrace Yoga's Roots and Ignite Your Yoga (Shambhala / Penguin Random House).
Her TEDx talk has reached over 350,000 viewers. She has studied with masters in the Himalayas, Shankarji, and the Dalai Lama, and is ordained by Thich Nhat Hanh. She regularly consults with the United Nations, Yoga Journal, and Peloton, and reaches millions of practitioners across platforms.
Presence / Presente and the methodology of
Presence Based Collective Care grew directly from this work, from years of bringing yoga therapy into communities navigating real harm, and training practitioners to do the same. It is the methodology made accessible for the organizations that need it most.
Ignite Institute for Yogic Studies and Social Change has been a leading voice in lineage-rooted, equity-centered yoga education for over a decade reaching millions yearly and certifying 2,500+ teachers and therapists across the US and internationally.
